PNG in Jan/Feb

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

hi folks,

we are thinking about spending 4-5 weeks in PNG in jan/feb, as part of a longer trip through asia.

from what I have read so far this might not be the ideal period for some parts of the country, at least weather-wise.
to limit costs, the idea would be to concentrate on probably max. 2 regions (e.g. sepik AND/OR new britain/ireland AND/OR milne bay/trobriand islands, ...)

i'd love to hear from those of you who have travelled in PNG that time of the year on what you would would recommend, do differently etc.

all stories greatly appreciated.

thanks a million,
tim.

I have travelled in PNG in different seasons and the only place this made a real difference was the Sepik River, which was plagued by myriad mosquitos in the wet but surprisingly largely devoid of them in the dry.
If you do opt to visit 3 areas, I'd suggest adding the Highlands to the Sepik and one of the 2 island options.

Hi,

I'm going to PNG in dec/Jan and I'm having a terrible time finding accommodation. May I ask if you are flying to Port Moresby, and if so, where you've decided to stay? Are you doing your travels independently or through a tour. The tours look great but seem wildly expensive for what I'm used to (i.e. a couple thousand dollars minimum for a few nights). Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
K
