PNG Island Paradise??

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Fellow travelers,

I plan to travel to PNG at some stage 2017 with my wife and 2 kids (4 & 6 years of age).
We are seasoned travelers and love to get off the beaten track, however, will exercise caution in PNG for safety reasons.

Can anyone recommend an 'Island Paradise' with white sand beaches/turquoise water/good diving & fishing?? I have read about the Conflict Islands which look stunning (but difficult and expensive to access) and was wondering if something similar to the Conflicts exists in other parts of PNG??

We would also like to get a culture hit and visit villages/schools etc if possible and donate to the local community.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

i would suggest lissenung island

http://www.lissenungisland.com

it has fantastic diving and is a proper tiny island you can walk around

easy to reach being a short boat trip from kavieng which you can fly to from POM

you could also take a trip down new ireland from kavieng by private car or PMV to visit villages - not much traditional culture survives in the area though - no need to go as far as namatani

see my old post a month in PNG

Hello Simon,

New Ireland is beautiful, maybe visit the Tsoi Islands at Tsoilik Lagoon guest house (ask at Venbert, which is also a very good and affordable place to stay in Kavieng).
And travel down the island, but do it by bike (yes, I'm Dutch ;-)). No guide needed. Rent the bikes at Noxie's place (who also can give you detailed information on the places to stay on the trip along the Boluminski highway). Maybe go as far as Dalom, with it's beautiful river.

More off the beaten track is Muschu Island, near Wewak. Stay with George. He has one functioning dive set. Maybe visit the Sepik River. You can travel on your own or George would be pleased to be you guide.

Note. If you are seasoned travelers, PNG is safe, when you take the normal precautions. Your hosts take very serious care of you.

Enjoy.
