PNG on your own without any reservation in advance

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Dear all travellers

I would like to go to PNG next year in september to Sing-sing festival.
As the travel with an agency is expensive enough...could you please tell me
if it's posible to travel without any reservation with a travel agency?

Like a backpacker...and with a tight budget... That is posible?
Has someone ever tried before?

Thanks in advance
ale

of course its possible - just dont expect much in the way of facilities as there
are so few travellers there is nothing set up for them - no internet cafes or guesthouses
with banana pancakes - be prepared for adventure

if you are on a budget be prepared to spend a lot of time getting from A to B and
finding somewhere to stay

at major festivals everything gets very busy - transport lodgings and facilities

I returned last sunday from a 4 week trip through New Britain, New Ireland and some of the Islands there. With a good bunch of luck and activity with the local people we found realy good and cheap accommodation, partialy directly at the beach and a excellent "mom cooking" of the fresh fish day's catch. Don't be afraid to ask around, all of them are very friendly and very helpfull if you just talk to them. In bigger cities be more attentive.Use PMV to save Money for travelling around.

If you need any recommendations for this area, let me know,

Hi alebayon,
I spent a month travelling around PNG in 2012. I didn't book anything in advance except a room in Goroka for the show. If you need any advice, please don't hesitate to contact me.
