PNG Q's

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

All,

I will be in Port Moresby on Tuesday for a few days, does anyone know of good reasonable accomodation? Also, any suggestions of what to do in POM?

I have some extra time and would like to hit one of the islands on the Bismarck Archipelago. Would you recommend New Britain or Bouganville and why?

Thanks for any insights to help me out.

Lee

In the Bismmarcks, my vote would actually go for New Ireland.
Good range of places to stay, lots of very pretty off-shore islands and beaches, and very laid-back, friendly locals.

Out of the other two, New Britain is certainly preferable to Bougainville.
It is more accessible, has more facilities, and has none of the tensions still present in parts of Bougainville.
It is also quite an amazing place with all those volcanoes!

I'm in the Rabaul/Kokopo area right now and am loving it. You could easily spend a week here and not get bored. Haven't been to New Ireland yet...Laszlo, any recommendations?

That church-run place in Kavieng (PT) is apparently still the cheapest in PNG, and Kavieng itself possibly the nicest provincial capital in the country.
Little in the way of specific recommendations outside the town, pretty much any of the off-shore islands should be very nice to visit. I even caught celebrations involving traditional music and dancing on one of them.
But even the villages on the "mainland" can be very nice - just stay away from the areas with oil-palm plantations!
