Port Moresby diving and safetyCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Just got back from five days in Port Moresby..the diving costs about 200 Kina for two dives and full gear hire. There seems to be a general unrest in Port Moresby..but in saying that the only incident was in a shopping arcade when I bumped into 4 'rascals'..just got eyed up more than anything. I found the PNG people to be amazing..and most couldn't do enough for you. The local paper reads like something out of the wild west..with shoot outs and ex pats being robbed and locked up in their houses , however when we went to Goverment house there was no signs of being looted as previously posted on the thorn tree. I found the LP New Guinea guide to be very helpful. If you have a bit of spare cash I would recommend staying at airways, at the moment though it is having a fullscale renovation done on it ..doing your dive then venturing out. There is two types of visitors, it seems, to Port Moresby. The ones who are genuine and want to enjoy the place..and the exploiters..you'll see more of the latter. Pity they don't invest some of their spoils back into the country.
