Port Moresby for dummys

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I'm an Aussie who is about to visit Port Moresby for a very short work trip - just two days. I've been instructed to lock myself away in my hotel room for the stay. Perhaps sensible advice given that I'm a female who knows close to nothing about PNG but I will have two Aussie males with me who I hope won't mind stepping outside for a look around. Maybe I will be able to persuade a work contact to show us around.
Given that I will have only a few hours of spare time, what advice can you offer someone who is very very keen to see more of this fascinating country?
How safe will I be? What experiences are not to be missed in Port Moresby?
Cheers

If you are travelling during the day you will be quite safe. As you will be here on work I am assuming that you will probably be in one of the big hotels or office blocks in Town. But don't walk outside at night - that would be asking for trouble. And if you do go out during the day, take a local PNG person with you, even if you have your male work colleagues with you. Someone from your work will be onnly too happy to show you around.

But what to see in a few hours? - unfortunately Port Moresby (POM) is not that kinda place. There are no real tourist sites in POM and you certainly won't get any idea of village life. But you could do the following: drive to Parliament House for a look, back along the Freeway(there is only one) to Town - there is a great view as you come over the top of the hill; travel along Airvos Avenue and up the top of Touragouba Hill to get a view of the harbour on one side and Ela Beach on the other, then down along Ela Beach, through Town and end up at the Yatch Club for a couple of drinks and watch the sun go down. If you are a little more adventourous get someone to drive you through Hanuabada Village during the day - it is a stilt village built over the sea, as is Koki Village at the eastern end of Ela Beach.

If you are even more adventourous you could visit Tabari Place in Boroko at lunch time. There is a market there with local clothes, carvings, bilums (string bags), hats, and jewellery. There are always a lot of people milling around and some expats don't like it for that reason, but I have been there many times and taken visitors who have bought souveniers and never had any problems.

Hopefully one of your PNG workmates will have a vechile and be able to take you on this tour. All the best. Remember to make a post telling us what you actually did.

That's really great, just what I was after.
The good news is I found out that don't fly out until 5pm the day after the work is done. My work colleagues won't be around but I will endeavour to find a local to show me something other than the inside of a hotel.

The market in Boroko is definitely worth going to. Good souvernirs. I had one day in PM and with 3 others hired a taxi for 3 hours and was driven around the city visiting just about everything mentioned by "northmedlbournedn". It was very cheap (90 kina split 4 ways) and we had a local to walk with us whenever we stopped anywhere.
Cheers.

You may want to drive out to Bomana war cemetary, and then swing by Airways hotel for lunch.
