Possible move to PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

We might be posted to PNG as early as August this year....if anyone who is currently living/working there could PM me if they're willing to answer questions about where to find good information on accommodation, etc. it would be greatly appreciated!

Otherwise, if there are websites that could be shared with others, including ones that post job listings, etc. it would be greatly appreciated if you could just send a few towards this post.

Finally, personally, I'd like a bit more information on security in Port Moresby (where we would be based)...as an expat (white, 31-year old woman), what limits are reasonable to expect? Can I drive on my own in the city? What about restaurants, and any night life (live music, etc.), that expats frequent -- do they exist?

Thanks for any information!

I moved to POM in August last year. I'm a 35 yo female, living here on my own.

I have no problems with driving around town on my own, even at night, and there's a number of restaurants that I'm quite comfortable going to on my own.
There are really only a couple of 'nightclubs' that I'd go to, and I personally wouldn't go on my own - but then I wouldn't in Australia either. It's not really my thing. There are an occasional 'events'. We've just had Andrew Pryor (one of the Ten Tenors) perform at Bacchus restaurant at Airways Hotel, which was really good. You'll get to meet people and you'll go to people's places for dinner, or go out with others for dinner, etc.

As for accommodation, all I can say is rental properties are expensive. (I was lucky, I didn't need to find my own accommodation).

There's always the potential for situations to turn dangerous, but as long as you're sensible, most people don't have major issues. There are some efforts to clean up the city, and the vast majority of Papua New Guineans are lovely friendly law-abiding people...it's just unfortunate about the criminal element who spoil things for everyone.

Thanks Am for the reply. Seems like if we follow all the advice and keep sensible we'll be okay, if living in a (secure) bubble.
