Recommandations for guides

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello

We're a couple planning to discover PNG early July for 2 weeks. Though we're experienced travelers, I'm getting increasingly aware that this country seems absolutely amazing but also not a place where one can improvise much.

We're interested in discovering villages, local tribes and culture more than landscape (we don't dive). Would anyone recommend a preferred region of PNG (aware 2 weeks is not long enough we need to select a specific place), and also a reliable local guide who could help us organize the trip ?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help !

Anne

for a first time visitor to PNG to make the most of 2 weeks you need a good budget and a good agent
who has personal experience of PNG and direct contact with local guides -there are plenty of recommendations
here and on the tripadvisor forum

in 2 weeks i would suggest visiting just 2 or 3 areas otherwise you have too many travel days

the sepik river is probably the best area to meet people living traditional lives, otherwise the highlands
but you need to get away from the cities, the smaller islands are also interesting, the trobriands being
quite special

read more trip reports here and on tripadvsor and come back with more specific questions

also be aware the election voting ends of july 8 and tensions will be high around here - no doubt
there will be outbreaks of trouble in some areas so be extra cautious

Hi all,

Got kind of the samen question as cilou. We're in PNG from 18th of july to approximately july 30th, after that we're heading to the Solomons. We had al kinds of plans, but it seems difficult traveling in PNG, so we're scaling down on the plans.

For the PNG part of our journey we would love to see some culture and nature. I'm thinking of starting in Goroka (since Tari seems too expensive) and find a guide to show us some beautiful places. Got three questions at the moment.

  1. Can recommend a local guide in Goroka?
  2. 10 days might be a bit lang for just one place, what other place would you recommend? Mt Hagen, Madang?
  3. Is there an other way to get to the Solomons apart from flying from Port Moresby?

Thanks for all help!

Merli

1 no - i have only been to goroka once 4 years ago - i am sure your accommodation will assist in finding a reliable guide

2 if you have 10 days then i would certainly spend part of it elsewhere - maybe spend a few days around goroko, a few heading by road to hagen and then fly to a coastal area - rabaul is great with a lot to see, madang is good as well especially for diving and snorkelling

3 no
