Recommendation for travellers to PNG to visit Tari (Hela Province)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello,
I was a solo traveller to Papua New Guinea in early 2012 for two weeks and would like to offer my recommendations for prospective travellers to the country. January is a fine time to travel to PNG. I was fortunate to be free of problems.
It is a very expensive country, so it is important to plan wisely beforehand and also to minimise impact on the environment and cultures. Many places are relatively recently 'discovered' by Westerners so amazingly a traveller's presence can have a significant impact here.

I started my travel in Port Moresby. After a couple days, I made my way to Tari, home area of the Huli wigmen, and stayed at the Warili Lodge as recommended by LP. It was a great experience! I had many long chats with Steven Warili, who is the local proprietor of the lodge. In addition to going bird-watching in the nearby pristine jungles, I also visited some bachelor boys schools where young Huli men learn to become warriors as well as experiencing a warrior spirit dance. This was an unforgettable experience! Most rewarding of all however, was meeting friends of Steven's in Tari town and having long cross-cultural chats in all different forms of communication. The town of Tari is currently undergoing massive cultural and potentially economic change associated with a national liquefied natural gas project. As a result, this highly biodiverse and culturally rewarding area could be at threat of change in the near future.

After this, I made my way eastwards from Tari along the Highlands Highway, travelling by PMV, to Goroka (via Mt. Hagen). In Goroka, I stayed at the RCF (conservation foundation as recommended by LP). Again, this was a great experience- with solar showers and a clean room. I went on an excursion to visit the Asaro mudmen through a contact I made at RCF.

Overall, I had a very pleasant and life-changing experience in Papua New Guinea! If you have any questions, please email me at: vkolinjivadi84@hotmail.com

Crazy expensive, you are right ! I really think locals bump prices right up because they have sniffed the fact that PNG has become kind of fashionable these days. I was in Jayapura and, as soon as I crossed over the border into Vanimo, prices went through the roof ... wonder why ...
