We had in another Thread big discussions about if it is possible to hitchhike PNG.
I met the best, most amazing, fascinating people of the world in this country. Its absolutly unique in the world and an adventure for sure, but if you give attention, you shouldn't be harmed.
I was about 2 month in PNG without using any planes. In the first 4 weeks I was only hitchhiking without using any ships or ferries. The hitchhiking situation in PNG is special. I recommend to stay in a village and wait there for another Lift. Don't just walk out into the bush alone unarmed. The Big cities are a real problem, try to hitchhike through it, or make fast some friends. Don't go into cities after 4 p,m, if you don't know where you gonna sleep. Alotau and the islands are less dangerous. Anyway the good people gonna help you before the bad people gonna find you. Just communicate.
The biggest part of the road system doesn't work at all it it is raining (no bridges) So try to have enough reserves.
Some concret Tips: From Vanimo till Aitape exist a woodfeller road. (its on no maps and there are no Infos in the net) From Angoram till Madang are a lot of betelnutboats going. Almost dalily. You can get a cheap ride or even a lift for free. Ask Jimmy on the Mummut Guesthouse. Between Lae and the whole highlands are a lot of Mega- trucks driving. Its a lift for sure. (Think about the long way they need to stopp) I think its even safer then the normal bus, they get hold ups almost daliy, while the trucks are bunkert. From Lae to Bulolo are coffee traders on the way, make friend to get lifts.
I try to update my Webinformation... but it needs a while, hadn't web in the last 2 month. I gonna but more links if the page is ready. http://cymytrip3.over-blog.de/article-von-madang-nach-goroka-highlands-85495209.html http://cymytrip3.over-blog.de/pages/Akte_Buangfestival_singsing-5829228.html
