Seeking male travel companion

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I want to go to a Cultural festival in PNG in 2007. Looking for a male travel companion since I'm hearing mixed reviews about being a solo female traveller. I'm a seasoned traveller and hope you are too. Me-40's; You-30's through 50's

I'm not set on any particular festival. Mt. Hagen, Goroka and Morobe all seem popular, but I'm not sure I want to be there with all the crowds. Summer through Fall 2007. No itinerary set yet. Easy treks, rivers or diving possible. Two week timeframe.

The only crowd at these shows are PNG people. I went to the Goroka Show last year and there was probably 200 white tourists at tops. The crowd in the showgrounds would have been two thousand or more, with as many outside. So you don't have to be worried about being overwhelmed by hordes of tourists.

After the Show I went to Mt Wilhelm and then did a relatively easy 3 day trek down the highlands towards Madang. I travelled on my own (but I'm a guy), but a lady did the same trip as me on her own (plus guide), but a couple of days later. You will get a guide in Kergusugl (village at the base of Mt Wilhelm).

I understand that you might be more comfortable travelling with someone, but if not this trip can, and has, been done solo.

Here is my report of that trip.

Whatever you do, make sure that you come to PNG as you will have a unique experience.

Hi

I lived in Mt Hagen for some time and attended the Hagen Show. It's true---there are very few foreigners there and half the fun was being with the crowd! And a crowd in PNG is not big my most standards, remember the population is only 3 million in the whole country.

PNG can be dangerous for solo females. You need to follow certain guidelines.

Don't go out at night alone, ever. EVER. If you are accompanied by a group of males, then fine.

Dress conservatively. Long skirts, loose pants and no tank tops or shorts especially.

Pickpocketing can happen, be careful.

Public fights happen--part of the culture. If you ever see a crowd forming, the rule is to just turn and walk in the other direction.

PNG men have a very different view of women than we are accustomed to. While it may appear as wrong to us, just remember that you are on their turf and if you break these rules, you can be seen as "fair game." To them, an unaccompanied women is looking for sex and is open for assault.

I do not mean to deter you from PNG--it is the most unique place I've ever been, and culturally fascinating. But do be very aware of your actions.

I can let you know more about this if you want. The Hagen show is absolutely stunning.

Hi, I was in Goroko last year for the singsing. I flew from Cairns to PNG and spent 1 month travelling on my own. I had a great time. I am a solo 50"s male. My wife didnt want to go. She is happy to stay in Cairns.
This year I am booked to go for 1 month, starting at Mt Hagen for the singsing. I finish 1 mth later with the Goroko singsing. Dates mid Aug to mid Sep.

Have yet to sort out the Wewak and Sepik part of the trip. I will revisit New Ireland again this year.
I am happy to talk to you about our travelling together,. I agree, I wouldnt want to be a female travelling on my own in PNG.

My email is nicknoff@bigpond.net.au
cheers John
