Sepik River 4-5 days (how you find good guide with boat, looking for tips how to travel best and where... who wants to join us in September?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi, I am from Germany. I want to do a sepik river tour with my friend in September for 4 days from Pagwi. We would have not too much time. Our plan was:
01.09: Arriving in Wewak evening
02.09: PMV or bus to Pagwi (3 hours??)
03.09 river tour Korok (30 Minutes boat) further to Suapmeri (further 0,5 hours) night in Suapmeri
04.09 boat to yentchen (1,5h) and further Palambei.
05.09 Palambei.
06.09 Palambei back to Pagwi
07.09 PMV or bus to Wewak

You think that is a good trip and possible? Or do you know a better plan nicer places?? Can you recommend a guide or how we can rent a boat for that days? I guess we should rent a canoe/boat for the howl time or can we do it stepwise from viallage to village? We would be so happy to get more tips to have a safe and cheap trip. We are backpacking exerienced and are used to stay basic. If you are also there you can write me. Maybe we do it in a small group ;-) so share costs.
Thanks in advance.

this is a good plan - arrive Wewak and leave for Pagwi the next day after buyng supplies then 3 nights on the river with final night at Pagwi for a morning PMV back to Wewak - any longer than this and you will need to think more seriously about how much and how to carry your food/water supplies etc - note there the are are no PMVs on sundays

in that time you could go a long way up or down river - either upriver to the wagu lakes and kwoma region
or downriver to the iatmul region and chambri lakes

the further you travel the more fuel you need and the more it costs but the more you see

you need a guide and your own canoe - without a canoe you could be stuck for days

read various trip reports and recommendations here and on the tripadvisor forums - good and bad experiences with various guides

arranging to meet the guide in Pagwi would be cheaper but meeting them in Wewak gives you a chance to arrange a plan B if they are a no show
