Sepik River trips???Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
HI, does anyone have any suggestions for travel on the Sepik river for maybe three or four days. We are 60 yr olds in Goroka for a week then to see the Huli Wigmen for a couple of days and then would like to take a short trip to experience the Sepik. We are pretty hardy travelers but have done the sleeping in jungle huts with millions of mosquitoes and would like to not get too much of that? Any ideas? Thanks so much.
I went to the Sepik River in December 2006. Here is my trip report. | 1
Hi! | 2 | |
Hi. We just got back from a month in PNG. Our first stop was Wewak and the Sepik River. We went with PNG Frontier Adventures for 4 days and 3 nights and it was the highlight of PNG for us. Chris was our guide and he was terrific. We stayed in a village guesthouse two nights and it was very comfortable. The 3rd night we stayed at a school principal's house on the river which had a beautiful sunset view. Mosquitos are not a problem when you're on the river or when you're sleeping under mosquito nets but when you're walking around and before you get into bed and the mosquito nets, they are a problem. Lots of repellent and wearing clothes that cover as much as possible of your body do help. We met wonderful people in the villages (Middle Sepik) and had much more time to talk to them at meals and after dinner than you would if you went on the Sepik Spirit - plus you can't beat a motorized dugout for comfort, breezes and intimacy of experience. | 3
I forgot to mention that there is a fabulous new place to stay in Wewak. The name is the In Wewak Boutique Hotel and the owner Philip will give travelers a 30% discount on the rooms. It is an amazing hotel to find in Wewak. It has a cafe and dining room and a veranda facing the sea. The staff is lovely and the rooms are bright, well-lit, clean and modern. The hotel is an oasis of comfort in Wewak. | 4
We are thinking of a short 4 day trip on the Sepik. Did you follow-up and eventually go on a trip? If so, which company did you use - any recommendations? We have read of some disreputable companies there who have vanished with deposit moneys! Would love to read your recollections of the vacation. | 5
