Sepik upstream itinerary

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

We're 2 people planning to visit the Sepik region starting from Madang: take a PMV to Bogia (day1) , hitch a banana boat to Angoram (day2), try to get to Pagwi from there on (day3-4-5-6) and take a PMV to Wewak (day7). This would be completed in approx. 7 days. Is this a plausible schedule? I read that travel by river from Angoram to Pagwi would be around 15 hours in total! I can't seem to work it out if there would be sufficient time to complete this trip in a relatively relaxed way.

Thanks a lot,

Suzanne

I think you can only plan to do this if you are prepared to rent your own boat, rather than hitch, especially from Angoram to Pagwi.
Even in Pagwi, you may not get a PMV to Wewak the same day.

its plausible but will probably take longer - trips like this need a flexible schedule

as laszlo says from angoram to pagwi isnt really a trade route so you may need to hire a canoe and crew - you will usually need to pay for them to return as well

Okay thanks for the info, It won't be an issue to pay someone for a canoe, it would rather be the question if there would be sufficient time to do thinks. Thanks Laszlo and Majordom
