Ships from Alotau to islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

We would like to travel to any of the islands East of Alatau. We read that Starships does some transport there. Does anyone have any information on timetables etc.? We are thinking of about travelling three days from and to Alotau, staying on the ship and just quickly visiting the islands the ship stops at.

"Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, a province of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern shore of Milne Bay.

The town is located within the area in which the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle. A memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event.

Hi Scholle. I live in Alotau and can assist with info if you need it. Star Ships travel to the D'Entrecasteauz and the Trobriands and leave mid week or on Fridays. Travelling from Port Moresby you might like to fly directly to Misima or to the Trobs by Airlines PNG and thence to Alotau by boat as the journeys are long, slow and very uncomfortable with minimum facilties. Check out Fiona at Airlines PNG: fspeedy@apng.com Star Ships may be contacted at: lulapom@online.net.pg Other local work boats travel to Misima and the other islands mid week. Remember that the seas are rough between June and September so you should not travel by dinghy on the opem seas. You need to bring your own safety jackets as the local boats do not provide them and have no insurance either. Get in touch if you require further information. Cheers, Gretta

Hi Scholle - Gretta covered the query, in addition may I also suggest that Nako and Kiwali Fisheries run vessels to the Islands. Not as tourist transport but, you may be able to buy passage. We have a lot of local Woodlark Islanders who travel that way.
I've used them a couple of times with no problem.
Both Companies have offices in Alotau - to find their location just ask around. Masurina Lodge is part of the same company.

Thanks Grettak and Wanemya,

sounds good, so we should be able to do a short trip. We are looking for the basic and uncomfortable.
And thanks Copperspoon, now I finally know where Alotau is - its good to have friends all over the world.
