Tari Southern Highlands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

My wife and I lived in Komo subdistrict, just south of Tari, from 1993-1995 while serving in the Peace Corps. We are planning to go back later this year and would like to know whether the Tari Women's Guesthouse is still functioning. They used to have a telephone - does anyone have their number? Also, the Tari bank was burned down a while back, does anyone know whether there is a bank operating in Tari now?

Thanks.

Luis

There is a post on this site, and some discussion, regarding Tari that mentions the guesthouse you are seeking information about. See 27th August 2007.

You might try emailing Ambua Lodge through their website.

The Bank of South Pacific website does not list Tari as a place they have a branch or ATM.

good luck.

I was in Tari in September 2007. I stayed at Warili Lodge, about 30 minutes out of Tari. When in Tari the Women's Guesthouse was pointed out to me and it appearded to be open for business. I have the mobile number for Steven Wari, the owner of Warili Lodge. I am sure that he would be able to give you an update on the status of the Guesthouse.

His number is +675 697 8018.

I stayed at the Tari Women's Guesthouse ca. 2 years ago.
Despite LP ignoring it, it was open for business, very friendly, and definitely the cheapest accomodation in Tari.
As you might know, it's very near the airstrip, so you should just check it out upon arrival.

I wouldn't count on owners of the other, more expensive accomodation options to spread info about it, but who knows?

There were no banks operating in Tari at that time, closed due to poor security, I was told.

There is a bank in Tari now. It is a privately owned bank by the mayor of Tari...great guy! It is above the Post Office. There isn't an ATM though. This bank has been open for nearly a year now.

Thank you all. I really appreciate your updates.

Hi,
Tari District Women's Association has been revived recently but not functioning well......The Guest House is operating well with electricity connected by Porgera Joint Venture -local minig company while the rest of rural township is in darkness.
We have problems with landline phones but you can contact the Association president M's Donna Mathew on her mobile phone +675 6961052 - take note that sometimes the B-Mobile network goes on and off

We have Bank of South Pacific -Private Agency here in Tari, no other banks. Every hundrend kina withdrawal, there is 10% user fee imposed by the Agency.

Hope this helps,

Tari girl
