Taxis in Moresby

Any recommendations for reliable taxi companies in Moresby? I've heard of Ark Taxi and Scarlett Taxi. Any thoughts on them or other good companies?

Just need something reliable for an early morning run to the airport (not staying in a hotel so no hotel airport shuttle).

I am a local and I have to tell you that most of the taxi drivers here are serious minded business people.

Many will be very happy to drive you to the airport at an early hour and will gladly give you their telephone numbers for further contact.

Scarlet taxis and Ark Taxis are great but a little more pricey than privately run taxis. I would suggest Comfort Taxis as they are roomy and you can barter with the taxi driver depending on how far you are staying from the airport.

However, locally there are unofficial set rates. For example:

Ela Beach to Airport - K40
Gerehu to Airport - K50
Waigani to Airport - K40
Boroko to Airport - K25
Gordons to Airport - K20

Make sure you are friendly to the driver and make conversation on your way to your destination as this will make him warm towards you.

Generally PNGians like to be asked about themselves. It is not being nosey to ask about which part of PNG the person is from; in PNG culture it is considered charming conversation.
