Travel from Wewak to Vanimo

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I would like to travel between Wewak and Vanimo. The LP guide book talks about a PMV to Airtape, and then a banana boat to Vanimo, and also the possibility of a 4wd PMV all the way. Does anyone know:
- If any PMVs go from Wewak to Airtape in the afternoon?
- If you can get a PMV and then the banana boat in the same day?
- If the 4wd PMVs are regular enough so I could rely on finding one on a Thursday?
Thanks
David

In my experience, neither the PMVs nor the banana boats were anything like regular.
I just had to hang around waiting for one to go.

Yes Laszlo I am experienced traveller in PNG! It's all pretty vague! It was really that I'd like to make the whole trip in one day. Any suggestions as to where to stay at Raja Ampat?

My current overall fave in RA is the Yenenas HS on Gam.

Great thank you.

i have not made the trip myself but know the area well - my understanding is as follows but this is PNG land of the unexpected - get to wewak in good time the day before and ask around

thursday should be fine

PMV leave wewak early to aitape to meet boats from vanimo - the passengers exchange and each group should reach their destinations before night (maybe)

if rough weather the boats will not go but the PMV drivers in wewak shouldl be aware of this

you cannot take the road all the way (do not attempt unless you are on a 4x4 expedition with equipment and backup and even then one of the main bridges could be down)

Ah that makes sense now. Thank you very much Majordom. I think I will book a refundable plane fare as backup in case the weather is bad.

I think for this trip, the plane is the best option, the PMV is 70 kina and the boat 200... not too much difference with the flight. In my experience around PNG, I see very dificult to make the trip in one day, the PMV can be delayed for any reason and its a long distance, so be prepared to sleep in Aitape.

Thank you very much Rafa. I just found out that the 4WD PMV goes only once per week too.
