Traveling in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi

so just got back from a great trip in PNG checking out Aitape and wewak etc by boat!!!!

Now I am looking at wanting to get to Kerema in the gulf region any ideas how to get there. And can i eaisly get to lae from there or am i best to go back to Port Moresby and go from there before going to lae etc.

p.s anyone heard of ukarumpa and know how to get there ?????

Ukarumpa is about 12km south west of Kainantu. By road from Gorokaor Lae. It is HQ for SIL (Summer institute of linguistics) and there is also a large govt high school there.

You can get to ukarumpa from kainantu by pmv i think it costs about 5 kina per person and it will be either on the back of a truck or in a minivan if ur lucky. You can stay at the SIL headquarters - they have a guesthouse but its best to book ahead and it is very expensive. The other alternative is in Ukarumpa village itself which is about 1km before you get to SIL. There is no formal accommodation but there are alot of friendly people living in the village and it might be worthwhile just asking to speak to someone at the church there and having them ask around. If you take up that option be prepared to sleep on the ground in village huts - basic basic. However, I'd ask if it is ok to stay at that time cause I know from time to time they have tribal issues which I know they were having a couple of months back. Not directed at outsiders (its mainly family stuff I think) but you could get caught up in it, so just use commonsense.
