Travelling PNG solo in July

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I'm considering travelling PNG solo in July, for about 2-3 weeks or so. Would it be feasible / enjoyable to do this solo without any or much pre-planning? Am I likely to meet other travellers? Are the locals open / welcoming to travellers? I have travelled a lot and this is how I usually approach it, but I realize that PNG may be a different beast.

Definitely go for it. Locals are very friendly and helpful towards foreigners, but don't count on meeting other foreign travelers.

i concur - locals are generally very friendly and helpful - in the larger cities though you do need to be careful -
and you are unlikely to meet any other foreign travellers

if you have time and a flexible itinerary then you will see the best of PNG - it is also the only way to see it
on a tight budget

i would think about an outline itinerary though especially as travelling from region to region involves flying

have a good read here and on the tripadvisor forum - posts that are a few years old are still relevant as not
much changes in PNG

While most of the people in PNG are friendly some caution is warranted. Be careful in Port Moresby, Lae and Mount Hagen where robbery of foreigners is far from unheard of. Also unless you're super self-reliant and not adverse to jungle navigation then you will have to fly to places so some degree of advanced planning will be necessary.
