Travelling through PNG in September/OctoberCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Hi, Ill be arriving in Port Moresby on the 2nd of September and will stay for about 2 months, traveling around PNG. I have been doing some training for the Kokoda Track, and will want to do that. I'd love to go to the Goroka festival, maybe climb Mt Wilhelm and if I make it up north, head out on the Sepik River, but its pretty loose, and ill take it as it goes. If you are in the country and need a wingman, let me know! There is some safety in numbers right? I'm 36, from Denmark, and am traveling through Polynesia for about 8 months, starting with PNG. Cheers
Hi Sindberg, your idea is to climg Mt Wilhelm before or after the Goroka Show? My idea, if climbing it in the end, was to do it before the Goroka Show and then head up to the Sepik overland/overwater through Madang and Bogia. I will be travelling in PNG only for 4 weeks, from September 1st to 27th. If you wanna join for any part, please let me know. By the way, I'm 37, from Spain. Kind regards, Iker | 1
Hey, That sounds cool! I wrote you a private message. Mt Wilhelm would probably be after Goroka, so as not to be under pressure to make it to the festival. Cheers | 2
i am also planning to head to png but focus on the sepik river mainly as i would ideally like to travel its distance from the source to mouth have travelled a lot in the past but not at this level i am currently in the begiining of planning and there is so little info on west sepik province so any advice or info would be greatly appreciated | 3
When would you be planning to start the trip? | 4
some point next year so some time off but previous has shown me how time fly so leaving no stone unturned but the river briefly crosses over to indonesia and snake back int new guinea and the only land border is way up nporth a bit of track so in two minds as to just go with the new guinea side and stay there but just follow it onward | 5
I would love to do the entire Sepik at some point. My plan is to head further east and into the south pacific, but I might come back, and perhaps join in on a Sepik expedition like that. | 6
if i can get the plan in motion like funding and people in country ill do it sooner but got to take a step at a time lol atleast i can write about it after but ye are you heading out alone | 7
Im going on a 8 months trip through Polynesia starting with PNG, ending up on the Easter Island around may 2015. Plan is to spend about 2 months in PNG and then move on. If I did the Sepik expedition, I would do it with someone for sure! | 8
ye man be really interesting so do you know anyone who has ever travelled there before or i you meeting anybody out there for guide maybe and were are you flying into | 9
I've just spent a week in the Sepik with the guide Joseph Kone (+675 71214829) who was absolutely spectacular. The trip was the absolute highlight of my time here. He mentioned that he has a single male going on a trip in September sometime looking for additional people to share the cost and experience. I can't rate Joe highly enough - he put together a full trip for us in under 24 hours, has all the contacts throughout at least the middle and upper sepik that you could need, and even stayed and arranged another day (at no cost) in Wewak when the plane was delayed. | 10
Thanks alot mate been looking for past 3 days ill contact him as soon as I can but seriously thanks again | 11
I'm ready to join up also. I will try and give Joseph a call, whenever the timezone allows! Thanks jwray! | 12
Well, that male looking for someone to join with it's me, hahahahhh...sindberg, my idea was to go overland after Goroka Show and, if we are two people, we may be able to talk with Joseph Kone before arriving. Much cheaper for us both, believe me, half than travelling alone with Joseph, :-)) | 13
Lol ! small world :) Let me give you my email in private message, and we can take it from there. Would be perfect to head north after the Goroka show. | 14
Great!! XD...this is how it has to be, :-)) | 15
jwray, can I ask you, how much did it cost for the guide please....and what did it include? | 16
I think it was somewhere around 400k each per day (4 travelling). Included PMV to and from Pagwi, canoe with crew and fuel, all food and water, accommodation, entry fees. Everything basically. I really do recommend Joseph. The volunteers that work in PNG use him as well so he must be good! | 17
Hi, Is anyone going to PNG in late Nov-Jan?? I'm a solo female and would love to have company... Cheers... | 18
jwray can I ask what footwear you were using? I'm thinking sandals/hikingshoes, and leaving my heavy hiking boots at home. Also, did you take any malaria medicine, or did you just carry it with you in case? And lastly, did you bring USD to change once there or? Thanks. | 19
Tbh I didn't wear shoes much of the time. Just flip flops. Took walking shoes but didn't use them - although might if you choose to walk a bit into the hills. I was taking doxy the whole time I was in PNG. There are mozzies in different places with different tastes! Apparently the Sepik is quite bad in wet season but we hardly saw any. (Then in Kavieng I got chewed to death!) No USD at all. Used ATMs and carried cash. There is no money changing once you leave Wewak. And make sure to take 1K and 2K notes - there isn't much to buy and people don't have much change. | 20
we will be on goroka show as well... | 21
