Trekking around Goroka

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello-
I was wondering if anyone had any information on:

1-Trekking between the villages in Crater Mountain area
2-Ballpark figure for cost of flights in the Crater Mountain area
3-Recommendations on guides (Highland tours, Trans Niugini Tours, others?) for climbing Mt. Wilhelm
4-cheap accomodation in Kundiawa <50k
5-General trekking experiences in the area

I think my partner and I will be up there in early July. Thanks for your feedback

There was a fairly detailed, enthusiastic post on Crater Mountain here - is it gone?
Too bad if so!

For Mount Wilhelm, my recommendation is NOT TO MAKE ANY PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS!
Just go to Kegsegul by PMV, stay at the East Kege GH, and arrange a guide/porter there.
You'll find lots of useful info in the the travellers' comments' book there (including two by me), and recommendations for specific guides.
Anything arranged from elsewhere is bound to be much more expensive, leave the locals out, and still offer the same experience.

I don't know of cheap accomodation in Kundiawa proper - no reason to stay there.
But there are the ecotourism projects nearby.

See the PNG link in my signo for more on these.

Not a really good time to be visiting the Highlands Zephyroo. It's election time and things get a little 'unpredictable'. Elections are held every 5 years and the whole nation becomes transfixed.

Things normally go back to normal once the new government is announced which should be aound late August.

Thanks Laszlo- I had no luck on finding that post.

-PNGMangi, I am aware of it being election time (can't really miss the convoys/traffic jams of PMVs in Moresby) but I hope to spend as little time as possible in Goroka and lae and hopefully avoid the craziness as much as possible-maybe we'll go in August or September if it sounds really bad.
