trekking in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

My partner and I will be travelling to PNG soon and we are hoping to do some hiking.

Has anyone walked or know any thing about the following treks:
1)Ononge - Tapini via mt Albert Edward

2) Kerema- Menyamya - Marawaka - possibly Kainantu
3) Sarawaget
4) Mt Giluwe

Did you use guides for all or part of these trips? Any recommendations? How much Kina per day?
Did you carry/require tents?
How readily available was food along the way? (for walk 2 and a lesser extent 1)

Cheers

for detail on mtgiluwe see post on this thread from feb 8th 2008.the old bush walking edition is very good/hard to get now.

Years ago I did Okapa to Baimaru. Took 2 weeks. Had a few carriers we took all the way. We just made shelters out of bush material every evening about 1600. You need to take all your food. The first people we encountered after the Gimi valley were in the foothills near Wafi. They only had sago which for me is almost inedible. We got a few fish and even ate a hornbill. PM me for any more info.

Hi guys,

Can't offer too much advice on these specifically, but if you find yourself in my neck of the woods (Morobe province), we have the 'Black Cat' (Wau to Lae) and 'Bulldog' (Wau to Port Moresby) treks here. On these I can offer all the advice you need, and a few intrepid explorers have joined them together for a full-on 8-10 days out.

You could try www.pngtrekkingadventures.com for Mt Giluwe perhaps.

Cheers.

Hi mangiwau

Would be interested in any advice you have on the Black Cat Track including getting to Wau and accommodation in Wau or Bulolo.

Cheers
