Trobriand august

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I've been in Trobriand islands this summer 5 days. There is a good review from supergrl2 in this forum from 5 years ago speaking about Okaiboma village. I only write to say it is absolutely updated for summer 2019 (well, maybe you won't eat fish if sea is not calmed...). Telephone number's Tom or prices are updated too. I felt absolutly safe travelling by myself and alone in Trobriand. You can use PMV's but you should try to take the first of the day to be sure. If they don't appear take in mind you will have to walk, like everyone makes.
To use hotels there is better to phone them first. In my case Butia hotel was closed when I arrived and I had to come back to Kiriwina to speak face to face with his manager because he lives there while there are not guests. If you arrive alone he will open Butia only for you.

Is there an atm at trobriand? Thank you

1

no banks or ATM

also often no internet or mobile phone signal due to lack of fuel or malfunction or weather

it is a pacific island !

Thank you for the answer!
Have you the number of some village host/beach huts? The numbers on the guide, doesn't run. Thank you

with kiriwina you really just have to arrive and sort it out on the ground

everyone will have a suggestion of where to go and where to stay so ask around and dont just take the first place offered - they are well used to visitors - if there is a festival, cricket, wedding, funeral then certainly try and take this in

Hi.
When I arrived to Kiriwina airport I hadn't nothing booked in advanced. I arrived at airport and always there are many people waiting to see planes and sell something to passengers. While I was waiting for my luggage, local people asked me where I was going to go. I decided, in that moment, that I was going to go Kiriwina. People tried to help me and join me to some local transport (very very expensive cause I'm foreigner, like a one way to Alotau air ticket...). One local was going to go there walking and he invited me to go with him. When we arrived he introduced me to son's chief and I passed some nights there. What I want to tell you is that really is not necessary to make a reservation to stay in villages. But if you want to get in touch with Tom, the son's chief, like a tell before, all information is in supergrl2 topic from 5 years ago. He can be reached at +675 7214-3334 on his cell phone. But take in mind they don't have WiFi and he have to go to Kiriwina to receive sign (they go frequently to its market). But you can speak with him by SMS's.
