Using APEC Business Travel Card in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I will be visiting Papua New Guinea for a few days in June, as a tourist. I have an APEC Business Travel Card which allows visa-free access to PNG (and most Asia-Pacific countries). Should I use that to enter PNG, or pay K100 for a visa on arrival? I suppose when I show the APEC card, they would ask what business I have in PNG. I wonder if I should say I am there for a general business survey or observation; or simply say I am visiting as a tourist. If I say the latter, they might say I cannot use the APEC card or something...

I have used the APEC card on many occasions as a tourist without any problems, in Malaysia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as it gives me immediate walk-through at immigration's diplomatic channel. I wonder if using it in PNG may give me more problems.. I have been told about people who use the card at Jakarta Airport and was immediately taken aside and shaken for a bribe.

I've used it in PNG (only once .. I've only been there once), and it was exactly the same as the other countries you've visited: just walk through, no fee, no special questions. I was pretty clearly dressed as a tourist and there were no questions asked about whether I was there on business or not.

I don't think there's any rule about not being allowed to use it for tourism. But, if the PNG authorities made one up (which i don't think is very likely), the worst that might happen is that they'd just insist you pay the K100.

I've used the card many times in Jakarta without incident. I was once half-heartedly asked for a bribe at Bali airport (by a very helpful official who rushed me through in about 5 minutes so I could run for a connecting flight), but I pretended not to understand and he didn't persist.
