Vanimo - Port Moresby by car?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello,

Is it possible to go to Port Moresby from Vanimo by car? I think there is no direct bus or something like that but I guess it should be possible to go somehow. Do you have any advises?

Thanks.

you would be the first person to ever achieve this "car" trip!!!!!a certain large river may halt the journey.....flights are the only real option

And a certain high and rugged mountain range, too...

2

I see. Then I guess I could only go to Wewak by car.

3

aitape to wewak is achievable, weather and rivers/bridges on your side...vanimo to aitape just about impossible due to flooded rivers....in the future maybe??jump on an aircraft to hop across this harsh country.see air new guinea and airlines png web sites for details....bring lots of patience to trek this place.

oh I see, i couldnt go by plane due to special reasons then i should forget about wewak too? I guess I will be able to see just vanimo.

5

There are occasional ships taking passengers to Wewak.
Or small boats to Aitepe, then PMV to Wewak.
None of the above are regular, but the second option is doable if you have enough time to spare.

6

I see. Is it easy to go from Jayapura to Vanimo by car?

7

Yes, at least if you are prepared to change at the border.
Mind you, you seem overly obsessed with the idea of a car.
In fact much of the non-flying/surface travel in New Guinea is not "by car".

8

I will be going by public transport. But as far as I understand Vanimo will be only place that I will see in Papua New Guinea.

9

OK, so you've managed to ignore the info in #6 altogether.
I'm giving up - maybe Don will have more patience.

Vanimo Wewak ship? If I had time I could think about this, but my main aim will be just seeing PNG.

You can travel by land as far as to Kikori, which is on South coast. There is pipeline road from Highlands heading down South. But it is service road - there are plenty restricted areas. Ive crossed that road from Kokori to Moro hitching in June 2011.

From Kikori there is only one way to travel further - boat. It will take about 8 hours to reach Kerema. There is road connection from Kerema to Port Moresby. At the moment one part of road between Kerema and Malalaua station is muddy so everybody travel by boats to Malalaua. There are some cars but not everywhere.

i see, thanks for information.
