Village trekking in the PNG Highlands - where to go

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi, I am in Jayapura, heading to PNG tomorrow. In general I got a decent idea where I want to go: North coast - highlands - new britain - bougainville - solomons. But still unclear where to go in the highlands. I am mostly looking to experience PNG culture & having some adventure and see some great scenery along the way. Not a fan of camping, but sharing a room with a family is fine. I can pay for a guide. Not interested in birds. I have about two weeks for the Highlands in total.

I thought about doing some trekking through villages, for example:
- From Madang, fly or take the new road to Simbai. Then take a guide and trek to Western highlands.

- Go to Mt Hagen and then visit the villages in Enga province
- I have also read about Mendi/Tari but it seems less safe and unclear what it can offer more

What do you think? Is there a place in the Highlands that stands out in terms of scenery and/or culture? Any strong opinion on what is not to be missed in the Highlands?

Rainy season is also starting, not sure how much that affect things.

Suppose I can also just go with the flow - nevertheless, any thoughts are much appreciated! Markus

I would say that for outstanding scenery and accessible traditional culture, a combination of climbing Mt Wilhelm and visiting the Tari Valley would be best. Hagen is a place to pass through as quickly as possible.
Note that if you have any chance at all to catch a singsing or "show" (not necessarily one of the 2 big, famous shows!) in the Highlands, it should not be missed!
