Visa on arrival in Port Moresby Airport

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi friends

Thinking about going to Papua this August. Read in the old LP that Visas are available upon entry in the country at the airport. Calling the Australien Embassy in CH today they said they will stamp me a visa but I have to pay it over there in Papua after arrival. What sense makes this? So if you can have it there and need to pay in local currency anyway - better to do so - or not?

What are your experiences? And how much does the visa cost at the moment for Germans, Austrians and Swiss?

Kind regards,
Hemis

It does not make much sense to get the visa before arrival, if you have no special requirements. If coming as a tourist, just get a visa on arrival at Jacksons (Port Moresby) airport. Go to the Right hand queue at the Customs line after coming off the airplane. There is a teller machine (ATM) just next to the line-up area before going through the Customs line.

Alternatively, if you are transitting through Cairns or Brisbane you can change your money into PNG Kina at the FOREX exchange before you get on board to PNG. The fee for a tourist visa on arrival is PGK 100, cash.

Enjoy your visit.

Kruegs.

I got a PNG visa (years ago) from the Australian Consulate in Vancouver, but they neglected to tell me I would have to pay the visa fee when I entered PNG, which I did from W. Papua (landed in Vanimo). It was a good thing I had the visa as otherwise I would have been turned back. Visas are only issued if you arrive in the country via Port Moresby. At that time I had to pay the fee in PNG kina, don't know what the rule is today though, and luckily I had found some before I got there, otherwise I would probably have been turned back for not being able to pay as well. So, if you're landing in Port Moresby you can get a visa at the airport but if you enter the country any other way you should get a visa beforehand. Of course all this might have changed by now but it would be provident to look into it.

I just went to Moresby as a tourist at the beginning of June (this year). You can just buy a 30 day visa on arrival by taking the right lane, as mentioned in another post. They accept Australian dollars as well. We paid AU$50 per visa (as an Australian and a kiwi). It was a quick and simple process, no need to worry at all in advance. Just make sure you have your outward bound flight details printed off to show them.

You might be wise to exchange your US$ for AU$, as these are more useful to people in this part of the world, and are worth more at the moment.

I got my visum at the Brussels embassy - they act for all EU citizens (at least). That was 40 Euro, no additional costs on arrival.
At POM airport, the queue for visa on arrival was actually much shorter than the one I was in ...
