Visa on Arrival still available?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi!

I'm hoping to go to PNG early next month. I was planning on going a year ago when there was no visa needed (UK passport). I've just checked, and it seems like now (Jan 2020) I do need a visa. By far the easiest would be the visa on arrival, especially as my plans might change. However, I'm getting some conflicting info from official websites.

FCO (UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, normally very accurate): "Tourists can get a visa free of charge on arrival"

PNG Embassy London: "All foreign visitors must obtain a visa before travelling to Papua New Guinea." No mention of e-visa or visa on arrival , and I simply don't have the time to get a visa in London (seems min 4 days processing).

TIMATIC (Used by airlines to check visa requirements https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/passport-visa-health-travel-document-requirements.htm): "Visa required. E-visas can be obtained before departure at https://evisa.ica.gov.pg/evisa/account/Apply . Passengers must have a printed e-visa confirmation.
Passengers with a British passport can obtain a visa on arrival at Port Moresby (POM) for a maximum stay of 60 days. Passengers must have a return/onward ticket.

E-visa website : Can get a free tourist visa but there's a $50 processing fee.

Immigration Website (https://ica.gov.pg/visa/visit): Simply says "Visa on Arrival: Available" with no further info.

Does anyone have recent experience of getting a free tourist visa at Port Moresby airport?

Thanks so much!

Loads of people. They wouldn't be allowed on a plane if they couldn't get a VOA. As far as I am aware, the VOA is not free.

Yes you do get a free visa on arrival but you have to apply for this which cost $50 processing fee. A bit of an odd one. Basically they give you a "free visa" but you pay to process it.

i am a regular visitor to png from the uk

for uk EU usa and many other countries there is a free visa on arrival at POM good for 60 days (or 30 for australians) for tourism

https://ica.gov.pg/uploads/media/post_file_6166280-voa-eligible-country-list-public-notice-31032014-v3-new.pdf

png recently introduced an evisa which you can get online and costs 50 usd

https://evisa.ica.gov.pg/evisa/account/Apply

my understanding us that this may one day supercede the voa but for the moment it is not needed if you fly into POM and can get voa

the london high commission( not embassy) is useless fir tourists and the official tourism site cannot be relied on either

the ICA site isnt well laid out but it is all there and correct

4

depending on your flight and staffing voa can be quicker than arriving with a visa - the desk is on the far right so push through if there are lots of visa holders queuing up the ramp into the immigration check

just before immigration you can buy duty free - useful as imported good quality is v expensive otherwise - they seal it in a bag and dont open it if you want to then take it onto a domestic flight as hand luggage
