Visiting country side from POM?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

End of Januar I'll arrive in Port Moresby and Mid February I'll leave. My idea was to spend a few days there end+beginning to have a buffer and buy stuff in the city like Bilum. :)

But then I want to visit the country side. As I understand a plane flight seems necessary. (Wet season in POM+it's so far from the center) So I was thinking to then maybe go to Mt. Hagen. And then continue from there walking/PMV? Does this make sense? It would be great to meet locals (as long as they are fine with it) and see some of the culture. I only need simple accommodation/travel comfort as long as safety is given. As far as I understand I should book the flight within the island as soon as possible.

Cheers, Philip

have a good look at posts here and on the tripadvisor as well

there are day trips from pom to kokoda , varirata park or lolotoa island resort

if you have a few days then i would reccommend trekking mt wilhelm, diving off madang or kavieng or seeing rabaul

the sepik is also possible but takes more than a few days and is expensive

jan feb is the wet season in pom but the north side of new guinea and the outer islands have a less pronounced seasonal variation
