Visiting Port Moresby

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi I am an older woman travelling alone through Port Moresby, would like to spend a couple of days there but see it has a bad reputation for crime etc - would stay at a secure hotel and try to book a guided tour with a reputable group - does anyone have any suggestions / experience cheers Julie

you would need a car and driver - your hotel or travel agent should be able to arrange this

during the day with a driver you would be safe but take the usual precautions - ie dont flash money or carry an expensive camera or phone and stay aware

i would suggest the national museum and the parliament and the nature park as the best places to visit
also go to the downtown area to look around and have lunch by the waterfront harbour city eg edge cafe
vision city mall is also interesting because its new and so out of place to anyone who knows the city

there are art/craft markets usually outside ela beach hotel and the holiday inn

i am not aware of anyone who runs group tours - there are not enough regular tourists - but ask at the hotel and you may be lucky and able to join some others
