Water concerns

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello

In regards to my backpacking adventure I am just wondering what the water situation is like for cleanliness and access. I am bringing a water treatment kit to be safe of course but I am not sure how much capacity I should bring since water bottles take up so much room in a pack. I am planning on bringing 2 x 1 Liter bottles and am wondering if just one would be enough.

Thanks

Kip

Don't worry about taking the kit, you won't need it. The water in PNG is excellent quality and I never had any problems anywhere in the country. When hiking, the water from the springs is about as pure as you get. Save space and just take one water bottle (buy other large water bottles from stores as you need).

Sweet thanks for the tip! this will cut down the pack size :)

I agree with Nomad. When hiking I have always drunk the water from springs or streams and I have never had any problems. Water in the towns is okay too - I drink straight from the tap. If in doubt, bottled water is widely available.

the only thing i will add is to make sure you check with a local first about the water from streams. you don't want to drink from one downstream from a village.

makes sence, regardless if you have your hep b vaccination
