What to do in Port Moresby for one day

Hi,

I am travelling to PNG for the first time (for business) in mid-march. I will have a free day on the Sunday and was wondering what there is to do in POM for the day. I am staying at Crowne Plaza. I have heard that it is not safe to walk around outside the compounds...even during the day. Should I just stay at my hotel and relax?

I will have a chaperone for during the week (Mon - Thu), but just wondering if it was safe to do anything by myself on the Sunday. Appreciate any thoughts / ideas.

Don't you love those constructive replies. I guess the Yacht Club and the Church are all the same to some.

Suggest you contact South Pacific Tours in Port Moresby, they have an office in the Holiday Inn and book a day tour. You can take in Bomana war Cemetery, The Botanical Gardens and at least one artifact shop is worth a visit as part part of the tour. Alternatively a trip down the costs to a village can be organised or if all that is to energetic go out to Loloata Island for the day, have a swim and lunch and do some snorkeling, if you can dive it is also possible to organise a day dive trip.

Just some thoughts - after all church usually only takes an hour or so of your day.

Hi Sventhor

By incredible coincidence, the sunday you fly in there will be a heap of Aussies and kiwis flying in as well to help out at a open air event at the POM stadium which starts Sun night. Most of us will be at Airways but theres a couple of us 1st timers who want to dive/snorkel on the sunday

Buck, I would be keen on a dive / snorkel, but I don't get into POM until 13:40...so will probably be a bit late. Tell me more about the open air stadium thingy you are all flying in for?

Otherwise a few cold beers down at the yacht club sounds pretty good.
