Would it be crazy to go to Goroka without rooms?

I'm thinking of traveling to PNG for the Goroka festival this year (Sept 14). Would it be crazy to try and find a room after arriving?
Also what is the best way to get from Vanimo, PNG to Goroka, as I really want to go into PNG from the west so I can return thru Indonesia.

Any help as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated, so I can make air reservations, thanks so so much, jackie

I am going to the Show again this year, with my sisiter from Aus, and went to book accomodation a month ago at Goroka Lodge, where I stayed last year. They first told me there were fully booked and didn't know where I would get accomodation. I then said I was coming a few days before and wanted one of the guys who works there to be my guide, as he was last year. So, on the basis that I was there last year, was staying a few extra nights and was hiring someone as a guide, I was told they would squeeze us in somewhere. So I hope they do!

I have heard from others in Port Moresby who have tried to book recently that they haven't been able to get any accomodation. So, yes, it would be crazy to go without a booking! Good luck.

Depending on the time you have, you could get from Vanimo to Goroka by either:

- flying from Vanimo to Madang and catching a PMV from Madang to Goroka, or
- flying from Vanimo to Port Moresby and then to Goroka. There are no direct flights from Vanimo, or Madang, to Goroka. Go to the Air Niugini web site for their timetable, but beware, it is only indicative. Air Niugini

ON a previous thread from last year, someone mentioned that there were rooms available here on the day of the festival!
