Advice for where to stay on a sunday

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hi guys,

i will head to Samoa in october and will arrive on a sunday. By reading the posts from other guys in this forum I know that on sunday everything is closed and almost nobody is working. Now i am wondering what would be the best for my arrival day...

1) Should I try to get to the wharf and cath the ferry to Savaii?
or
2) Should I stay anywhere near the wharf and catch the ferry on Monday?

Is it possible to get anyhow to the ferry terminal on a sunday? I am arriving 10:50am...is it possible to be at the ferry terminal by 12 pm? I just carry hand luggage with me.

There are no buses on a sunday, right?
I know there are taxis, but are they operating on a sunday?

Is it worth to stay on a sunday in Apia?

Thanks for any advice!

No worries. You can easily get to the wharf upon arrival by taxi and there will be buses in Savaii. If your flight really arrives at 10.50 am, which is not always that certain, you should be able to catch the 12pm ferry. If you are late, take a taxi to the wharf anyway, get some food and drinks and wait for the next boat departure. Because yes, the shops at the wharf are open too.

Spending the rest of the Sunday in Apia only to go to Savaii next day is not a recommendable option though. Sundays can be pretty boring in Apia.

There is a ferry at 10am 12, 2pm and 4pm on a Sunday
most Villages on Savaii will have a bus meeting the ferry. There are a lot more accommodation options around the ferry on Savaii than on Upolu anyway (and better priced)
It depends on the type of place you are looking for where you would be best to stay but mostly by the airport are overpriced.
A taxi will cost 25 tala to the wharf and 12 tala on the ferry ,arriving in Salelologa you can either jump straight on a bus waiting at the ferry ( often quite crowded on a sunday) or get a taxi to a place close by
A few examples Lusias lagoon chalets from 65 tala 1pax in a fale, restaurant onsite, salafai backpackers 50 tala 1pax fan ensuite room, Jetover 100tala 1pax ac ensuite with pool and restaurant onsite. Also at lalomalava 5 kms away The Savaiian Hotal -50 tala backpacker room, 85 fan ensuite, 170 a/c ensuite, pool and restaurant onsite. (20 tala by taxi)
One thing to remember is very few shops and food outlets will be open, any place with a restaurant and accommodation will open for guests but most takeaways and small shops will be closed- Molesi's Supermarket by the lights at Salelologa is open in the afternoon for a while....
I have stayed at all the above places, I have also stayed at the Airport Lodge and Transit Motel by the airport.
My advice is to grab a taxi , take the ferry and stay somewhere like The Savaiian Hotel, they have an accommodation option to suit all budgets and a good value restaurant & bar , a nice outlook with a pool, a little removed from the town ...and plenty of buses going past ( 2 tala to town easy on the yellow Safua bus or Tuasivi or Puapua bus) Best to pop back into town if you want to catch a long distance bus and catch it at the market or ferry as they often leave town full.
Hope you enjoy your trip, I just arrived back two days ago after a 6 week budget trip, missing it already

On Sunday, the ferry from Upolu leaves at 12pm and 4pm, from Savaii at 10am amd 2pm. Always the big boat. The small ferry is not going on Sundays!
