arriving at night to SamoaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa
hi, I'm cominig at 20.30 to Samoa with my bike (though i'm a bit put of after reading the comments on dogs in Samoa) and would like to cycle around Savaii, so rather not go to Apia but stay somwhwere around the shipping place to Savaii.. is there any cheap place there? wouldn't like to spend my money on the airport lodge or anything like that..
I made this exact same trip several years ago. Although I arrived from Tutuila at night, everything is the same. My suggestion; wait at Faleolo Airport until first light. Nobody will hassle you. You will be safe. Then bike over to Mulifanua Wharf and . . . . wait for the boat. No schedule. Whenever it leaves. But it will leave. When you get to Salelologa in Savaii take some time to get oriented. I strongly suggest chaining your bike to a tree when you go on excursions. When you are riding the chain comes in handy to ward off any misbehaving dog. I traveled REALLY light, but did have a tire repair kit. Don't get caught cycling in the dark. Drivers are far more vicious than dogs. Please enjoy yourself. People are great. They will be waving and saying hello all the time. last bit of advice. It might be tempting to stay with a local family and it might turn out ok. But I recommend overnighting in an established tourist beach fale establishment. Last bit. Carry a supply of toilet paper.
