Buying a sim card in Samoa

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hi all, can anyone tell me if I can buy a sim card in Apia that I can use for local calls
n to ring home (Australia)? If so which is the most reliable brand n how much will it cost?
Thank you

No problem. There is Digicel and BlueSky. Cost, especially for calling to Australia, will depend heavily on what promotion is just on when you will be in Samoa. The card itself will never cost more than 100 Tala (AUD40), but there is up to 80% phone credit already included, so the card itself is more or less for free. Both companies have outlets in central Apia, very close to each other, right next to the Post Office. So just go there, compare and decide.

I personally had a much better experience with Digicel in Fiji than in Samoa, but Digitel Samoa was (Jan 2012) still cheaper than BlueSky. Didn't need it so much for calling, but more for internet. The internet bundles are really not worth. Except in some places in Savaii, I had no trouble with reception.
The shops are next to the main roundabout in town.

Unless you need mobile internet, use the internet cafes in Apia and forget about internet in the rest of the country. There's another company that offers scarce wifi hotspots, but they're expensive and coverage is just good in Apia
