Day trip to Manono Island

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hi guys,
Will be in Samoa mid-March and would like to spend a day on Manono Island; since we would like to spend sufficient time on the tiny island and meet the people there, is it easy to go by ourselves or shall we go through some tour operator in Apia? Anyone has some good tips? Thanks you so much, Cheers

You can catch an early morning bus out to Manono uta ( the landing area) and catch a boat out to the island. Cheaper if you wait for a while for the boat to fill up with people. Then you can just walk around the island on your own and then catch the boat back later in the day.

I stayed at Princess Tui's in Apia back in 2004 and one of the staff arranged a trip for me. It was pretty good; a car took me to the jetty at the other end of the island and then I got my own boat over to Manono.

I can't remember the name of the man who met me at the wharf on Manono but he was a village chief, having previously spent time in Los Angeles. He gave me a great tour of the island, including right into the hill in the centre, and then I had a nice meal before heading back to the mainland.

This chap was really keen on getting people to visit Manono, I'm not sure how he got on though. I'd be interested to hear if he's still there.
