Importing a car to Samoa

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Can anyone shed light on how much the duty is on importing a vehicle into Samoa? Also are there regulations about the age of the car. I know that only left hand drive cars are able to be imported, but can anyone help me with the other question?

As far as I know the latest regulations are:

1. Only right hand drive
2. Not older than 2002 built (5 years old)
3. Duties are set on the value of the vehicle one year after manufacturing (not on the real actual value of the vehicle). They use a list here.
4. 15% VAGST will be a added on the sum of: car value (as in 3.) plus all freight costs plus duties paid (= the value of the vehicle after being imported)

I am not sure about the duty rates. Tariffs vary according to the type of vehicle, i.e. for a pick-up there are lower rates than for a sports car. Not more than 20% though.
It is pretty expensive in any case. Expect a few thousand bucks.

Thanks for that - kinnda makes things a little difficult doesn't it

It does, but if you think about it, as a country Samoa has to sell a lot of coconuts (or attract a lot of tourists) to pay for the importation of a single car. That's one of the reasons why the duties for car imports are so high (plus the Samoa Govt. needs the revenue).

But when the Samoan people need a car and go into serious debt to get one, surely that is not so desirable in the islands best interests? Not wanting to get all political but just cant seem to get my head around the whole thing
