Samoa- Getting there by boat..?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Is it possible to travel from New zealand (north or south island) to Samoa by cargo or passenger ship?

A search has only lead me to the most expensive ways, and whilst flying would probably be cheaper and quicker I thought it might be nice to bop around the ocean for a couple of days and have a watery adventure or am i just mad?

Unless you go on a yacht, it will be expensive and possibly also difficult, whether by cruise ship or cargo ship.
Fly.

You're mad.

"You're mad."
This.

If you take the ferry from Upolu to Savaii, or the ferry from Upolu to Tutuila (American Samoa), that'll be plenty to show you that it's not a "nice bop around the ocean."

If you mean by "Samoa" the "Independent State of Samoa" and the islands of Upolu (where Apia is located) and Savaii your chances are slim. You might try the Forum Line.

If you mean the Samoan Archipelago your chances are a lot better getting to Tutuila (Where Pago Pago is located)which is 60 kilometers from Upolu. Several shipping lines call Pago because of the high volume of canned tuna shipped from there. One other option is catching a ride from a fishing boat departing Auckland, New Zealand. An interisland ferry travels between Tutuila and Upolu twice a week. That's a lot of fun and cheap. Dolphins, flying fish, ocean illuminescent algae can be seen on every trip.

Now THAT would be an adventure!!!

No you are not mad.I went from France to New Zealand without taking any plane and that involved a few cargo ships.Just google "cargo cruises",send a mail to a few companies going your way and be very flexible like "I would like to go from anywhere in NZ to anywhere in the Samoa in such a month ie July 2011" and I bet you will have a few answers. The price is like flying full fare, and you must enjoy to be alone and entertain yourself because the distractions are zero except some convervations at mealtimes...Good luck!
