Samoa in January

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hello!

I'm thinking about going to Samoa in January, I would rather go another time as I'm assuming Jan is high season but I don't really have any other options.
My main concern is accommodation. I've heard in passing that fales are the best/cheapest way to stay in Samoa but I'm a bit confused as to how it works? Do I just turn up an home there's a free space? Won't everywhere be full in January? Google isn't really being helpful.
Also, how long would you recommend staying. The cheapest combination of flights for me would be either 10 or 14 days but I'm travelling alone and am worried about getting bored and lonely. Would a week be enough? I'll probably never be back to that part of the world so I don't want to rush it.
Finally what's the best way to see the islands themselves? Is public transport an option or would I have to rent a car? Any other tips and tricks welcome!

Yes, you just turn up.
No, everywhere won't be full.

A week could be enough.
As I found Samoa the least likeable country in the region, to me too long, too!

Buses get you to most places, but may only go a few times a day.
Of course by rental car you can get around faster.
