Surf in Samoa

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hi
My boyfriend and i are planning on coming to Samoa for about 8 days in mid June.

He is a really avid surfer and i was hoping to find somewhere to stay that is nearby a great surf spot. Does anyone know a good area ?

Also i hear about these surfcamps - do we have to stay there if we want to surf? can we just take day boat trips out to surf?

Is it hot during mid JUne?

We would like a nice private beach hutt - any recommendations?

Thanks so much
Tina

There is Moanalei Dive'N'Surf located at Taufua Beach Fales in Lalomanu.

http://www.moanaleidivensurf.com/

You do not have to stay there to use their services. On the other hand the Taufua Beach Fales are about the best there anyway.

June is dry season and "winter" in Samoa, so it is the "coldest" time of the year. Only 30 C at day, 22 C at night (86 F day, 71 F night).

The surfing component of the operation at Lalomanu is pretty weak. they lost their main surfing guide, and now primarily concentrate on snorkel and scuba trips.

You could check out the Maninoa Surf Resort, really just an open fale operation like those at Lalomanu but focusing entirely on surfing. The location is about the best you can get in Samoa for surfing, as there are 6 or 8 breaks within a short boat ride. Two or three of those (Coconuts and the 2 Siumu breaks, inside and outside) you can take a long paddle to. They have several boats, and you're right next to Coconuts Beach Club and Sinalei if you want a nicer meal or some cocktails (they don't sell alcohol at Maninoa but you can buy beer at a village store a 10 or 15 minute walk away). I don't know how you would contact the resort directly, but you could try doing it through the Samoa Hotel Association website.

Another option is a small place called Sina PJ beach fales in the village of Tafitoala. This is a few kilometers west down the coast from Maninoa. It's right in the middle of a village, the fales are pretty nice, and the family that runs it is nice too. It's the only beach fale operation in the village, so you get a real sense of the Samoan lifestyle staying there. From Sina PJ you can paddle out to the Tafitoala break, a left which is one of the most popular breaks in that area. The Maninoa boat comes over there a lot of days.

You can also contact a guy named Neil Lumsden to do individual surf guiding for you. He mainly handles guests at Coconuts, but I think will take others if he's got room or isn't busy. He's got a small boat and a truck, so if there are no waves on the south coast, he can take you to them elsewhere. I guess you'd have to contact Neil through Coconuts Beach Club, maybe they could give you his phone number or email address.

On Savaii, there's a place I think is called Samoa Surfari's. It's at Aganoa Beach, run by an Aussie, and it a really nice location, with at least one break out front.

Samoa Surf has this website that it admits is out of date, but it might be a useful starting point.

Maninoa Surf camp is low on service. Yes there are surf breaks nearby, but Sina PJ Fales also has 2 breaks right out front, and the Maninoa boat goes there heas anyway.
Dont commit your holidayto Maniino, we stayed 3 nights and were happy to leave, when we found that other places were s much better and friendlier.
