Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

HI there
Can anyone give me any information about surfing in Samoa.. Im thinking to go in January.
What are they waves like.. are they consistent and are they easy to get to.
Thanks Heaps

Hi,

I went surfing in Samoa this June/July so the swell forecasts will obviously be different for Jan.

On Savai'i the best place I found was Aganoa, which was a reef break about 50 meters off the beach. If you don't want to stay at the accommodation there you have to pay the local Chief about 50 tala. The swell was pretty consistent for 4-5 days. It went from around 3-8 feet. The wind didn't affect it too much luckily as its protected and there is both a left and right break. Its not too crowded, around 8-10 people at most. You can get a bus from the wharf to the place, but it's a mile walk from the main road. There are other surf spots on the island but they are hard to get too and don't pick up smaller swells as well.

On Upolo the swell died down dramatically so I didn't surf at all unfortunately :(. You can't surf outside Coconuts or a lot of places along the southern coast as the reef was destroyed by the tsunami a year or too back. There is also no surf out the front of Apia so you need to drive a bit from the capital.

As long as swell is approaching one side of the island you can surf. The locals are quite happy for you to drive into their village and ask to surf. You will have to pay a small fee of 20-30 tala. It's like that at all the beaches, you may have to pay that just to go swimming! Like all places there are good and bad swell days. The breaks are usually less than 100meters off the beach so not too hard to get too.

Hope this helps

for surfing on Upolu, Samoa must check out the guides with Manoa Tours based at the Coconuts Beach club, they also service Sinalei and most other resorts on the island. They are always on the early morning surfs and get out the best spots.
