Tonga vs Samoa, budget, weather etc

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hello

I have the chance to got to Pacific islands in February. After some research am looking at either Tonga or Samoa.

  1. What is the weather in February? Will it still be humid and rainy or is it clearing?
  2. Which is the more traditional?
  3. What would my average daily spend be? I would be staying in budget accommodation and do some activities like seakayaking which looks expensive but catch local buses in preference to taking tours.

thanks

I have traveled to Samoa and Tonga and If I was you I would travel to Samoa over Tonga.
The weather is about the same all year around in Samoa but in Feburary you are looking
about 50/50 on rain and sunshine. Most Samoans travel back overseas by the end of Jarurary, so
Feburary is a good time to caught some good deals. In Apia it will be hard to find a place to stay under
$25 US dollars for a Non A/C room will cost about $30-$50 US a night and with A/C about $40-$60 US.
Best Bet for a cheap place in Apia is Betty Moores across the st. from Pasefika Inn. You can stay in
beach fale and bring you own food to eat and stay under $15 a day but most beach fale are outside
of Apia.Buses are the best way in Samoa the buses are name by the village that owns the bus , so ask
someone if that bus goes to the place you want to go . you will pay $5 US dollars for around trip
on a bus to the otherside of the Island. To stay in Apia a day with room and eating out with taking
the buses you spend about $55 dollars a day. Staying on the beach and bring you own food and
with bus travel about $30 a day. Overall Samoa is a great place to visit but can cost some money.
You can save alot of money by befriend a Samoan which is very easy and stay with them and learn
the true FA'A samoa.

definitely samoa over tonga. there is a lot to see, and you can stay fairly cheaply if you find a samoan friend. the diving is great and the beaches and rain forest rocks. you can ask about aquasamoa scuba and water sports for a lot of your aqua-activities. they are located right next to aggie grey's resort. good people who are willing to come and get you, and take you back to your place. they will also give you straight up information about where to go, and things to do.
