where to stay in Samoa?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Samoa

Hi
My boyfriend and I are going to Samoa from 28/9 - 8/10 we are pretty flexible as to where we want to go but want to go somewhere near a surf beach.

Anyone recommend clean cheap accommodation?? which areas are best? any information is appreciated please.

Also renting a car - anyone know round about how much it will cost? any good companies??

Should we book ahead for accommodation or just turn up and find our own??

Thanks so much
Tina

hi tina
we are in samoa at a similar time, this is our third trip. some surf budget ideas are fales at line up surf resort, between coconuts and sinalei on the southern side. if you go here visit sinalei and go down to the resort on the beach near the pier, at the end of the peir is a fresh water spring that you jump into , there is fish everywhere it;s very beautiful. also salani is a popular surf resort. we are hiring our car from apia car rentals, my sister also went through this company and had no problems, we are getting a ute $200 ST (about $100 aus day) rav4 type cars go for about $160 ST.
you have to go to lalmano beach, any of the fales will ge great, this beach is amazing, also materava is good. most fales are $50 aus p/person for accomodation, breaky and dinner. and you will have to most amazing time. cheers sue

Hey Sue

Thanks so much I am going to look up a few of your comments :) $50 per person per night seems a bit high for a basic fale doesn't it? or is that a proper room? Is it safe enough to get a fale without walls? or do you recommend a fale with walls? Do you think we need to book or just turn up and see what is available?

Thanks again
Tina

Accomodation is not cheap in Samoa and $50 (which is 50 Samoan Tala, approx. US$20) is certainly the bottom line. Places like Vacations and Taufua charge 90 Tala, which is about the upper line for fale accomodation.
For a fale without walls but with dinner and breakfast included! In fact you mainly pay for the meals that is why they charge per person and not per room (fale) ...
Besides that: walls do not cost much - that is not a criteria for comfort. It is fresh air and breeze without walls versus hot and sticky air with walls (but you feel more private). You will have to find out what you feel more comfortable with.

We were in Samoa for 4 weeks in May. The loveliest beaches were Lalomanu, Virgin Cove and Manase. We stayed at Litia Sinis at Lalomanu. It's a very busy beach with lots of accomodation. Litia Sinis seemed to be the nicest place with great buffet stile food. The fales are closed with balcony and on the beach. The downpoint is that everything is very close to the road. To go to the baathroom you actually have to cross it at all the places to stay.
Virgin Cove is in the middle of nowhere, but the setting is very nice and romantic. They have a free shuttle service from the tourist information in Apia. On the way back it's not free. Unfortunately it is full of mosquitos, especially after rain. We left early because it was not possible to sit outside. The fales are in the rainforest off the beach. There is a very good island night on Friday or Saturday.
The nicest place for us was Tanu Beach Fales in Manase on Savai. It's a big place, but hardly full and quite spread out. The food was good and the fales on top of the Beach lovely and clean. The beach here is very long and nice to walk along. There is even a small bar next door. The owner is the matai of the village, so nobady would dare to steal from the fales. On sundays you are invited to have lunch with the family. They also take you to church, if you like.
Tanus is 50 Tala, the other places 90 Tala. They are all friendly, but Tanus is the cheapest. Even the beer here is the cheapest on Savai and a lot cheaper than at the other places. If you ask, they may organise a round the island tour. We stayed here for 10 days and will definitely go back.

i found vigin cove excellent! no major problem with mosquitos as long as you have a good deet spray. just about anywhere in Samoa you'll find the little buggers! the fia fia night is excellent and one of the best i've seen. watch out for the village "tax" on entry and exit from the beach. food was good although the award for this must go to Tuafu in Lalomanu. Huge comunial dinners everynight which are excellent. awesome beach and fish life for snorkelling.
