3 Weeks in The Solomon Islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hey all,

I'm after some advice from anyone who has been to the SI and has some tips on what to see and do. I was originally going to learn to scuba dive but for health reasons I can no longer do this.

At the moment I'm spending 2 nights in Honiara when I arrive, then heading for a night on Munda before heading to Tetepare Ecolodge for 5 days. After that I'm a little unsure exactly what to do. I'm thinking of spending some more time on Munda and visiting Gizo and Marovo Lagoon. I'm arriving in Honiara on 18/10.

If anyone has any suggestions on some must see islands, villages, sites etc then I'd be very grateful for any help that you could offer.

Keith

Gizo and Marovo Lagoon are good choices, but if you want something different to add to your list, why not visit one of either Rennell or Bellona Islands, two Polynesian outliers that are not over-touristed (you need to fly there). Or Auki on Malaita (reachable by ferry).

Thanks for the advice watsoff - I'll look into Rennell and Bellona Islands.

If your interested in Rennell then check out http://www.tegano-lake.com/ the guy who runs the site (now lives in Australia, but is from Lake Tegano and has family there) is really lovely and helped organise a homestay for us in Rennel and organise our transport with someone there to meet us at the plane. There is no internet or mobile reception at Lake Tegano so you need to plan well in advance but it is well worth the extra effort as Rennell (and Tetepare) were the highlights of our trip.
