Advice for short trip to Solomon Islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice from those of you who know the Solomon Islands well. My partner and I are thinking of tacking on a few days in the islands to our upcoming trip to PNG. Given that we’ll have no more than 5 days, we are thinking we should just fly to one island and stay there rather than try to hop around.

We are interested in diving, hikes, relaxing, good food, and WW2 relics. I’m also fascinated by unique cultural practices (such as visiting skull island!).

From what I can gather, Gizo seems to be the best island to park ourselves. I’d welcome any advice if anyone has better ideas!

Within Gizo, it sounds like the two most popular resorts are Fatboys and Sanabis. We are having trouble deciding between the two. Does anyone have any advice?

Finally - we are a same sex couple. Will this present any issues in the SI? We are discrete in public, but want to feel comfortable staying in a hotel room together.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Gizo is your best choice. There are a couple of other accomodation places in Gizo and surroundings, look: www.solomonislands-hotels.travel/ This webside has prices in Solomon Dollar (SBG) and is run by Dive Gizo. There is no need to book in advance.
One idea would be to go by ship oneway Honiara to Gizo or Gizo to Honiara. There are two passenger ships leaving Honiara on Sunday around 8-9am, one is Kosco, the name of the other I don't remember, but is the better one. Try to avoid Kosco. These ships return from Gizo on Monday and are back on Wednesday in Honiara. They stop on the way a lot of times. At each stop there is a big crowd of locals waiting and selling their products.

That’s a cool idea. Thanks!

The other option would be to stay near Honiara, and visit Savo, Maravagi and Tulagi in Central Islands province. Less touristy than the west, but becoming more traveller-friendly.
Look for the Facebook site Visit Central Province Solomon Islands.
You would save the time of a long ship voyage to Gizo, or an expensive flight.

Thanks! We ended up deciding to just park ourselves in Gizo for a few days and use it as a base to explore that area.
