Availability and costs of long term rental in Honiara

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

I'm planning to accept a job offer in the Solomons and will likely move there around August 2010. Can anyone who's familiar with the housing situation in Honiara give me a picture of what to expect in terms of availability and price levels? I have done some research already but unfortunately not much information is available online (at least not current information). I am aware that price levels have skyrocketed in recent years.

Ideally, I would like to find a 3-4 bedroom house in a secure, family friendly location. We're a family of 3 (myself, wife and 8 mo. baby).

Any info on reputable real estate agents (not sure if there are even any "official" agents, as it is probably the case in the Solis), or someone who can give me some good leads on what's available is highly appreciated.

Finally, I am not sure if my employer will cover housing costs, so I am looking to get the maximum value for my money.

Cheers!

Most Solomon Islands jobs include housing, as it has been difficult for years. Since the advent of RAMSI in 2003, it is nearly impossible.
There are a few Estate agents who have appeared recently. Probably the best known company locally is BJS agencies, trading in real estate as Blums, email blums@bjs.com.sb
From the latest phone book, there are also Best Investment Limited, PO Box 491, Honiara, J.T Developments Limited, with the same address (I think this may be a man who builds houses to let to expats, but not sure). Premiere Real Estate and Property Management, PO Box R106 Honiara, and Pasha Property, PO Box 1630, Honiara.
I know nothing about the rest of these.
Expect to pay $5000 to $10,000 SBD a month for the type of house you are looking for.

Hi
I arrived in Honiara 12 months ago and had a good experience with Premiere real estate in the above post. I am paying $SBD18,000 a month and while that is partly due to an excellent view I didn't see anything that I would seriuously consider for less than $SBD 12,000. The cost of accommodation is very high here.

I can help you with 2 options coming up on 24th July, 2011. One is a 2 bedroom apartment and the other is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. Both with spectacular views in a safe area. regards FC

My wife and I are planning to work in Gizo, SI for 18 months starting February 2012 and we will be needing long term rental accommodation. Is anyone able to offer some advice on who to contact please? I also understand the Japanese constructed a hospital on Gizo recently and perhaps their accommodation is available.?
many thanks

The owners of This website are based in Gizo, and while they are travel operators, they may be able to help you.
It might be a good idea to start a new thread, as this one is probably not obvious unless someone has already posted on it. There are a few people based in Solomon Islands who check in here occasionally.

Hi, I may be moving to Honiara in January 2014. Can anyone provide an update on the rental situation? I will be looking for a 2 bedroom apartment as a minimum. Thanks

As RAMSI is gradually leaving at present there should be more rental properties becoming available at possibly a better rate. I have not, however, any current first-hand information on prices or availability.
There are new apartments for rent near the King Solomon Hotel, but I gather they are high end and qute expensive
