Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

hello!

i am planning to arrive to the solomon islands this august!

i wanted to know if that's ok to travel there as a solo backpacker and how much will a day will cost me there as a backpacker including sleeping and eating?and there are any guesthouse for backpackers in the solomon's?

i dont mind staying with the locals in the villages...

and one more thing...

when i get to the solomon's i have to show them an exit ticket from the country(i can't get in to the solomon's with a one way ticket?)? there isn't an option of buying an exit ticket there?

First, yes you must have a ticket out of the country,or you will be stopped from getting on any plane going to Solomon Islands. The only exception is if you have a resident's Visa.
It is more than safe enough for solo backpackers. However, there really is no designated backpacker accommodation, with dorms and so on. The cheaper places to stay are those used by locals, called transit or rest houses. The cheapest travel between ilands is local ships, but be prepared to sleep on deck - many of them travel at night.
In provinces, you would be able to stay in a village for about $30 AUD, including all meals (local food). A room in Chester House, Honiara, with shared bathroom and kitchen, would be about $40- $50 a night.
Local food (buy at the market and cook yourself) is very cheap.Any imported food is not. In Honiara, there are lots of places where you can buy cheap cooked food to eat, especially in the middle of the day.
