Cultural Attractions in Solomons

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi, im writing to try and find some information on tourism in the solomons
Me and a friend are going to go for a week flying into Honaria on the 15th of september and would like to explore some places outside of the city or perhaps another island time/transport permitting. We aren't too bothered about diving and would prefer to do some village homestays and see some indigenous cultural things and get away from the tourist trail. We'd also like to try and keep expenses as low as possible and stay in budget accomodation. I was wondering if anybody knew of places which would be interesting to visit that were cheap and not too far from Honaria so we could catch the flight back the week later.

Thank you
Ian

Definitely Malaita!
Happens to be one of the most traditional-minded parts of the Solomons, yet one of the most easily reached from Honiara. It is also off the main tourist trail, which is around Western Province.
Check out Ozziegiraffe's link about the Lau Lagoon in NE Malaita - it sounds the perfect place for you, except that it might be a bit too remote for a week-long trip. Should that be the case, you could still visit the more accessible western part of Malaita, including the Langa-Langa Lagoon.
I also found Malaita the cheapest main island in the Solomons.

Alternatively, most of rural Guadalcanal itself, away from Honiara, remains well off the tourist track, too!

It is possible to visit the Lau Lagoon within a week, depending on how you get to Auki, and what days you are coming in and out of Honiara. Send me a PM and I will send you more information if you are interested. Approximate cost $150 SBD a night including food for the village stay component, plus travel for you (and they like to provide an escort at least from Auki, possibly from Honiara, whose fare you would need to pay.)
As you are arriving in Honiara on a Tuesday, you would need to fly to Auki, which is quite expensive, as regular boats only run on Monday, and Friday.
Unfortunately, the Tuesday flights are the least convenient for Malaita travel. Thursday would have been better (have you already booked?)
